Jean and Grace

Jean Stoffer is known for her timeless design aesthetic, creating environments that are both elegant and welcoming. Now, she’s collaborating with her daughter Grace Start on projects that bring a new facet to the family’s gracious design philosophies. Amidst the scenic woods of Michigan, they transformed a rustic log cabin into a charming and inviting vacation rental—a project that brought the mother-daughter design duo closer together and showed their audiences what it means to design for hospitality.

“You’re inviting people in for their sake. The home is the host. That’s the difference between entertaining and hospitality.”

Jean Stoffer

Jean Stoffer and Grace Start recently embarked on a path they had never taken before, transforming a rustic log cabin into a charming and inviting vacation rental. Upon entering the cabin, guests are enveloped in warmth and serenity. While maintaining the authentic nature of the cabin, Grace had the daring idea to stain and or paint the exposed logs of every wall—a decision that laid the foundation for their design choices throughout the home.

The kitchen and coffee bar are a perfect blend of modern convenience and cabin chic. Meals and memories are made at the large central island, featuring a stainless steel KOHLER® workstation sink with an Artifacts® kitchen faucet as the centerpiece. The well-appointed coffee bar offers important visible storage for renters, a convenient bar sink, and the handsome Artifacts Gentleman’s® bar faucet.

“It never has to be perfect. Give yourself permission to create.”

The colorful ANN SACKS® tile in the guest bathroom resembles “root beer—rich in color with depth,” according to Grace. The choice opened their palette to mix finishes like Matte Black around the mirror trim, brass accented lighting, and an Artifacts faucet in Vibrant® Polished Nickel. While the Tresham® toilet in White is stately, it is also easy to clean with its skirted trapway.

Bold tile broadened the bathroom palette to welcome mixed finishes.

Especially convenient for a rental cabin, the Tresham skirted toilet is easy to clean.

The Artifacts faucet in Vibrant® Polished Nickel fits the elevated cabin bathroom decor.

Jean and Grace encourage you to find opportunities, however large or small, to add casual beauty and warmth to your space—and to welcome others in to revel in the space you’ve created. This is your invitation to bring hospitality home.
