A Buyer’s Guide
to Bathroom Sinks

Everything you need to know about choosing a bathroom sink for your home.

Getting Started

Use the following bathroom sink buying guide to find the right option for your dream bathroom.

How to Choose a Bathroom Sink

There are a lot of little decisions that go into choosing a new bathroom sink. To find a sink that expresses your style, you’ll want to think about sink material, color, and shape, along with installation type and your overall bathroom design.

Key Considerations

Here are some of the key questions to consider as you get started. Once you’ve considered the factors below, you’ll be ready to move on to the design, installation, and personal features that will truly make it an expression of your unique style and lifestyle.

Who will use the sink and how will it be used?

The sink type and design should be compatible with how it will be used. A shallow statement sink may be best suited to a powder room where handwashing is the primary activity. For a busy family bathroom, a deeper sink that can work for face washing, shaving, and other personal grooming tasks may make more sense.

Are you making an artful statement?

A powder room or smaller bathroom that guests use is the perfect place to choose a sink that’s a focal point and makes a design statement. KOHLER Artist Editions® bathroom sinks are available in everything from faceted glass to patterned vitreous china.

How much space do you have available?

Sinks come in standard sizes that coordinate with typical countertop cutouts. Consider the size of the sink and the counter. Would you rather have a slightly smaller sink and more counter space or a bigger sink and less surface area? For a pedestal sink rather than a vanity, you will need to ensure that it fits your space.

How do you measure your space correctly?

If this is a simple replacement, measure the length, width, and height of your current sink and choose one with the same measurements. Measure length from side to side and width from front to back. Where you measure will depend on the installation type.

Be sure to refer to the specification sheet for exact dimensions. Height and depth are two separate measurements. Height is the full measure taken on the exterior from top to bottom. Depth is the interior measure of the basin and the depth of water it will hold. Sinks with an overflow are measured from the deepest point to the overflow only.

What other questions should you consider before getting started?

  • Are you replacing your existing sink and working with the same footprint?
  • Are you coordinating with a vanity or would you like a pedestal or console sink?
  • If you’re keeping an existing faucet, will it limit the height of the sink?
  • Is your space plumbed for one or two sinks? If one, is it centered in the space or off to one side?
  • Will your vanity accommodate the sink shape you prefer—round, oval, rectangle, or square?

Design

Achieving the look and feel you want in your bathroom comes down to design elements. Material, color, pattern, and shape all combine to give a bathroom sink its distinct personality and determine how it interacts with a room’s other elements.

Bathroom Sink Materials

Different bathroom sink materials create different textures, sheens, and weights. Your material choice depends on your personal preferences.

Vitreous China

Vitreous china is highly durable and easy to clean.

Enameled Cast Iron

Enameled cast iron is made by sifting or spraying powdered glass onto molten cast iron. The two fuse and harden into a durable glossy enamel that has a deep, rich color.

Stainless Steel

Practical, durable, and easy to clean, a stainless steel bathroom sink can introduce neutral or industrial elements to your bathroom design.

Glass

With their jewel-like tones and facets, glass bathroom sinks add sparkle, shine, and a variety of opaque or translucent colors to your design.

Installation

The sink installation type you choose is the next step toward achieving your overall style and design goals. Consider whether you want your sink to stand out from, or blend into, the larger bathroom design. Also, consider whether your sink will provide enough room for all of your grooming supplies and the amount of cleaning and maintenance it will require.

Pedestal Sinks

With a generous basin size, ample deck space, and a narrow base, a pedestal sink is ideal for a smaller bathroom or powder room.

Wall-Mount Sinks

A space-saving solution for small baths, wall-mount sinks also allow easy wheelchair access. Many models have a shroud to hide pipes.

Vessel Sinks

A vessel sink is a popular choice for powder rooms, resting on top of the counter. The sink’s shallow basin accentuates the movement of water.

Undermount Sinks

With its seamless counter-to-basin transition, an undermount sink has a contemporary, finished look that’s easy to clean.

Drop-In Sinks

Drop-in sinks are ideal for a refresh as they can be retrofitted to an existing counter.

Once you’ve decided on the type of sink and made sure it will fit with your space and needs, it’s time to have some fun. Consider sinks that make a bold statement along with a faucet that will bring out its full beauty.
